How to Prevent Drainage Problems?

If you know how to prevent the problems yourself, it might save you calling us out. Like they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. FS Drainage Services have put together a quick step-by-step tutorial guide on drain maintenance.

1. Prepare yourself with some essential tools and equipment

A work person is only as good as their tools, so make sure you’ve got the following:

  • Protective eyewear preferably safety goggles
  • Protective gloves
  • Your kettle
  • A couple of tablespoons of baking soda
  • A cup of white vinegar
  • Some empty plastic bottles

2. A weekly flush of boiling water

It might seem trivial but just pouring a kettle of boiling water down your drain holes every week will go a long way in terms of prevention. The boiling water breaks up the building fats, oil and grease.

3. Use some baking soda and vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar probably brings back childhood memories of volcano science projects and lots of mess. Alas, there should be no mess with our guide. If the boiling hot water hasn’t done the trick, we’d recommend you stay clear of harsh chemicals. Why not try pouring a couple of tablespoons of baking soda down the drain with a cup of white vinegar.

4. Rinse it out with more boiling water

If you listen closely, you’ll be able to hear the fizzing of the vinegar and baking soda working together. But don’t fear, its only the reaction breaking down the fat, oil and grease. Let the baking soda and vinegar work together for about 5-10 minutes then you can rinse it down with more boiling hot water.

5. Repetition is good practice

We’d recommend repeating this process every few months! That being said, why not just take extra caution with what you put down your drains? One suggestion we make to our customers is that once they’ve finished cooking, collect the oil and grease and pour it into a used bottle. You can throw this bottle in the bin once its full. This will go a long way in preventing potential issues from arising in the future.

6. Still unsure? Let a professional do the hard work!
